Got to love the obdII As stated I went in to get the emissions done and came out with a fail and these codes . P0153:02 sensor circuit slow response [ bank 2 02 sensor 1 ]
P0170:fuel trim malfunction [bank 11]
P0173:fuel trim malfunction [bank 2]
There was also a P1250 code but nothing listing what it was. I've had the 02 code before but can't remember which bank it is . What would the fuel trim be? the car is a 96 2.8 .

Is your a4 the 2.8 or 1.8T ? Ive been researching DTC's for my wifes car and I believe bank 2 O2 sensor 1 is before the CAT on the driver side if you have the 2.8, but then again ive done very limited reading.

but is is possible to use VAG-COM to clear your codes right before doing emissions. Like when your in line. That way their computer doesnt get any codes? Dont know if this will work but might

The OBDII test at the emissions station looks for those past codes.
It is possible to have a compling car, but "fail" the test because of the stored codes.

the fault occurs again and trips a DTC. Usually, some operational time of the affected component and/or system is required before a DTC is recorded by the ECM.

*SAE P0153/VAG 16537: O2 sensor is contaminated or slits plugged, or corrosion (caused by water ingress) - using a VAG COM or VAG scan tool, the O2 sensor response time is checked; if out of spec, replace O2 sensor.
* SAE P0170/VAG 16554 (Bank 1): oil thinning (fuel contamination in oil), intake air leak in intake manifold area, MAF sesnor sending incorrect signal, or excessive oil burning due to internal engine problem (e.g., piston rings).
*SAE P0173/VAG 16557 (Bank 2): Same as VAG 16554.
Given the possibility of plugged slits in the O2 sensor coupled w/ potential excessive oil burning, I would suspect you have some bad rings. How is the oil consumption? If you're added a qt every few hundred miles or so, then I expect you'll know the source of your failed emissions test.
