Default Oil weights?

What is the general consensus on what oil weight is the best for a stock S4?
I would like to put 5W-50 Synthetic in for the warmer temps coming up in the next few months, is anyone else using that weight?
I just think the 5W-30 is to light, does anyone agree or disagree?

Default I disagree - you need an oil that doesn't break down, not one with a high vis..

Good ones are Amsoil 0w30, Mobil1 0w40, and Castrol made-in-Germany 0w30. These oils are rated ACEA A3, BMW LongLife-01, and have a reasonably high HT/HS (High Temp, High Shear) number.

I don't know of any 5w30 oil that is as well rated. The best ones, such as Mobil1, are ACEA A5 which means a lower HT/HS rating that's fine for normal use but not for hot stressful conditions.

Heavier oils, such as 5w50, do not flow through the small oil galleys and lube the upper end well, except when they're real hot. Your 2.7t will be oil-starved most of the time.

Some BMW engines are designed for heavy oil, but not the 2.7t!

Thanks for the information.
