Seattle ---> N. California road trip via HWY 1. Any advice?
Leaving Friday with 4 carloads of people. We plan to hit astoria, tillamook, spend a couple days in a friend's cabin in newport, do the dune buggy thing in florence, hit the oregon vortex, then get to the redwoods. Probably go through Bend, then Portland on the way back up.
We don't have to be back to Seattle until a week from Sunday, so what advice do you guys have? How about St. Patty's day? We'll be somewhere between astoria and lincoln city, so are there any places on the coast that are well known for their, uhh, irish influences (yeah, prolly not)?
I'm looking for hikes, little known attractions, cool pubs/breweries, and the like. I'm originally from central oregon, so I'm pretty familiar with all of the "must see" things.
Spring break 2007! WOOO!

Here's a few options...
Pelican Pub in Pacific City is a must hit. Right there on the beach. Great food and great beer (at least that's what my beer drinking friends say).
You can see the world's biggest Sitka Spruce near Seaside. Just south of Seaside, take Hwy 26 east for about a mile or so and you'll see a sign for it. Nothing super special, but its a little known attraction, and if you're gonna go see the Redwoods, it'd be a cool comparison.
The Astoria Column is cool if the weather is nice. Its a small tower (a couple hundred feet tall?) on a hill, giving you a great view of the region, including a nice view the Columbia as it dumps into the Pacific.
Lincoln City has a casino on the beach (Chinook Winds). There's also a good-sized factory outlet mall in Lincoln City. (And don't forget, no sales tax in OR.)
If you're from central OR, then you probably already know of all the attractions there (Mt Bachelor, high desert museum, that column outside Bend, etc).
If you have time, Crater Lake might be cool. But I think most of the roads are closed at this time of year, so definitely call ahead to see if its even worth the trek.

Oh ya, a few more...
If you're going from Bend to Portland, then I assume you're going Hwy 26 over Mt Hood. The Ratskeller in Government Camp has awesome pizza and good beer. And there's always Calamity Jane's (1 mile before you get to Sandy on Hwy 26) for awesome (and weird) burgers and shakes.

When in Portland don't miss Rogue Ale NW 14th and NW Flanders in the Pearl District..great Kobe
beef burgers and you can craze the Pearl District for a great night out.
