Default I just bought one of those today to do my S4. My wifes allroad had the same problem you described

after swapping the CTS it was fine again.

Default Re: Technical question--Tepm. gauge miss-behaving

I have a 2000 A6 4.2L that is doing the same thing...kind of.
When I start my engine, all the gages work properly, with the exception of my water temp gage.
It's faulty most of the time but then there is the rare day when it work correctly.
I am confident that it's a sensor issue.

Default temp sender, easy 15 minute DIY

go buy the part at the stealership. Lots of info in the archives.

this is from my 2.7t allroad, the green thingy is what you want to replace.

Default Yes, you are on the right track, I beleive if the temp sensor you are using is a 4 pin, that should

cure the issue with the gauge in the cluster..

its a quick fix also, just make sure to swap it out when the vehicle is cold.
