Default Track day at Pacific Raceway in Kent

Originally was trying to build a corporate event to reserve the track for the day at the raceway, but a few folks have flaked, and now I only have a handful of interested folks.

Looking to see if anyone from here might be interested in jumping on board.

We have yet to pick a date. Flexibility in dates will most likely be a factor of how many registrants we have. We currently have 4 from my company driving a variety of vehicles.

I know you guys have regular track days also from the threads posted here, and I'm not trying to compete, just trying to get the car to the track for the first time.

More info here in attached link.

More Info

The last time I did that 1-day course it was only about $275 or so. Why so much more?

Default Remember...ProFormance, Skippy, Bondurant, etc. are "for profit"

business, with paid instructors and capital equipment costs in addition to track rental fees, insurance, lunches, emergency equipment, corner workers and the like. I'll bet their track-rental costs have gone up just like almost all other venues.

Last year the one-day school was about $350-$375 IIRC.

Makes the local Audi Club/other club events look like real bargains, no?

Default Re: Track only days? (No instruction)

So do the local Audi/Audiworld clubs ever do track days at Pacific Raceways without instruction? I'm used to paying around $150 for motorcycle track days there. There's no instruction, but you usually get around 6 hours of open track time and they keep an ambulance at on site. I expect it will be a little higher with a car, and probably less open track time, but I'm hoping to find something closer to $150 than $475.

Holy shiz. There are track days almost every other week at PR for $160. Save your money.

Default No, we don't have any dates there...VERY expensive, and good dates

are competed for by many clubs.

I've done "open" lapping days at PR after completing the ProFormance course. Either take the course or get Don to "sign" you off. Then the cost is much closer to what you paid for just lapping. Even then (for a small fee) instructors are available if you wish. All around, still a good deal for lapping.

We are trying to get a "tie-in" with the local Alfa Club to share their PR track dates, so "stay tuned" for announcements on that front.

Cheers,

Default Share a track date with Alfa?

Would that change the Alfa day registration conditions? AFAIK, NWARC permits anyone to fly with them, without any affiliation required, as long as applicants have suitable prior credentials.

After April (which is full), NWARC's next "good" day is in October. The only weekend PR/SIR days that I know about from May through September are one IRDC date in July and the BMW CCA/PNW PCA joint weekend in September.

Why don't you just promote the Alfa days among your club members. Seems more efficient. BMW CCA Puget Sound seems to pass NWARC track info very transparently to its membership through the local club bulletin board.

Default BS. Go to the Alfa club track day, pay $160, get an instructor all day for free.

You start lapping at the very first session. You get 5-6 20 minute sessions (which is plenty by the way) and you get the same instructor all day. Why would you pay 3x that?

Now, you do have to be signed off to lap by yourself or take a passenger, but that's fine.

It's ridiculous that they charge that much. You can get similar instruction at a regular lapping day.

Default Well, there is a slight advantage to taking the ProFormance class...

...although it only really comes into play for your initial track day with a club.

Some clubs and driving schools will wave the ground school/novice in-car instruction class requirement if you've taken the ProFormance class and have a lapping day or two under your belt with ProFormance (or other clubs).

Even so, almost all clubs will require a check-out ride for a *relative* new comer to a track as the club will want to be confident that you can drive on the specific road-course at speed before letting you out on your own -- that is just common sense.

This same relative newcomer driver will also probably drive in a Novice group the first time out with a club (but that would apply with the ProFormance class as well if you do not get out to the track with much regularity).

If you are returning to the track with any frequency, the few hundred dollars difference (Proformance vs. club instruction) kind of blends with the gas to drive to the track, club track day fees, overnight stays (PIR roadtrips), meals, etc. over time. I think it's kind of a wash in the end. The ProFormance class is good and the quality of instruction generally superior. Almost all the instructors race or are retired racers.

As an aside: Once you have a few track days under your belt with the clubs at PR, I believe that ProFormance will allow you to do a check out ride (charged by them as a partial day instructor probably). If you pass that, then you are permitted to drive with their novice group and so on.

Having said all that: I generally agree with you. I don't think it is all that important to go out with ProFormance, but I did it and am glad of it. It's handy knowing Don and crew. Plus, having a couple certificates from his school pretty much gets me out of any local novice schools as I branch into other clubs...meaning more time on track in (what AlanL refers to as) "the quiet zone."

YMMV.
