WA State DOL & Car Value/Sales Tax
Question for those of you who have dealt with the Washington DOL on used vehicle sales tax.
I purchased the car for $7000, it's a 98.5 A4 2.8 Avant manual with the sports package. The DOL says that the value of my car is $11500. Which one of those prices will sales tax be calculated on, Sales price or the inflated DOL value?
Blue Book value for my car was right around $10k when I purchased it. The car needed a good amount of work, new shocks, clutch and rear main seal. In the end the car ended up costing close to $9500. I did pay sales tax on the parts and labor for the repairs.
Any advice?

Re: I think you can get a letter from the seller stating that the car needed repairs
Car was purchased from a private party. I could contact the seller for a letter like that though.

I believe they have a range of acceptable values. If it is in that range, you pay
on what you actually paid.
When I bought my motorcycle, it was for about $1500 below what they said it should be worth, but it was in the range and I paid tax on the lower number.
Yours might not be in the range, though.
Get a letter from the seller like A2M suggested and bring your receipts to the DOL.

get the correct form first. it's a tax form that can be dl-ed off the internet. i forget which, ask
your closest dmv.
you and the seller both need to fill out that one sheet and state all the repairs that need to be done on the car. and then both of you have to sign it.

WA DOL will make every effort to tax you on their adjusted value. The burden of proof is on you to document a differnt value. I think that the forms are available online. Both you and the seller will need to sign the paperwork and agree on a declared value. It is my understanding that the DOL will sometimes make the effort to verify the information independently.

The Seller is required to indicate the selling price on the Title, which provides the basis...
for the sales tax. Also, obtain a Bill of Sale from the seller as a back-up. There could be various reasons why a vehicle is sold for less or more than the DOL's value, e.g., bad engine, bodty damage, paint damage, excessive interior wear, high mileage, etc. DOL's value comes into play for computing RTA tax, or any other fee associated with the value of the vehicle.
