Worth picking up an old BMW 2002tii for a racecar? (other race thoughts inside)

I admit to not knowing much about them, but BMWphiles seem to rave about them, and I found one in bad cosmetic condition for a good price (perfect future race car). I know that the E30 3-series crowd has a good presence locally, but are there any 2002s running around?
Honestly, I'm having the hardest time finding a car that I (a) can afford, (b) want to drive, and (c) can race locally. BMWs and Porsches only, around $5k non-prepped or $10k prepped, and good local series support (don't want to always have to drive to NorCal).
Maybe I just do the E30 3-series - that's the only thing that seems to fit my criteria.

Pretty horse and carriage tech type cars out of the box. Doesn't take much to make them peppy, but then you have to watch the regs of any series you're running.
Personally, I'd wait to find an E30 325 in your range.

You could go to the IRDC or Cascade school for something like $160 and get a novice license (in your street car) at PR or PIR. Then rent an E30 to race with the kids around here. Check with Tom Olsson, Bill Spornitz, or any of the guys on the bmwpugetsound.com forum that are racing in that group. It'll cost you like $500 to $750 per race. Pay a little more and you could try other cars. I know Michael Lord rents his E36 325i and I've seen at least one Nissan 240ZX offered for rent at the track during a race. Anyway, after 3 races and your required corner working volunteering, you have your area license. That's your first season or so. Then you just have to race like 3 times a year to maintain your license. Eventually, you get a senior license. By then you should be in a financial situation to get your own car and have an idea as to whether you want to make the investment. Say you've run for 3 years renting, thats $4500 to $6750. Unless you total a car, bumping fenders won't be THAT expensive on an E30. Heck, if you're decent, you might even get invited to drive in an Enduro. Then again: Peanut gallery advice is free.

IMHO the E-30 series is the way to go.
for 7-10K you are good to go.
let me know.
