Timing belt tensioner failed at 56K on my 99.5 A4 1.8t with estimated repair cost of $3K. Is there any hope for AofA to cover part of the repair?

The piston popped out of the tensioner, hence the tensioner wheel became de-tensioned and allowed the belt to slip. No valves were bent but the middle of the three intake valves on all 4 cylinders had just *barely* touched their respective pistons, as evident by the carbon having been knocked off of the edge of the valves. I suppose the lifters absorbed the impact and saved the valves.
I hope whoever signed off on that stupid tensioner design lost their job over it.

Now there is nothing in the world like wearing out a German engine from driving too fast. At least that's what I'll think it's from.

Used 99 A4 with 79K purchased in January'04 -> Timing belt faild at 82K in March'04.. terrible luck..
Needed to replace the head.. For a weird reason starter also failed during this..
Total spent: $2600 for used head and all the little tit bit parts needed..

6 years exactly (1998 1.8T quattro put into service in Aug 1998)
80K miles
tensioner failed - valve job necessary due to zero clearance motor
Note: car was purchased as certified used Audi w/47K miles - serviced by dealer.
After much haranguing and intervention by service manager, Audi has agreed to pay 25% of bill after initial flat refusal.
What is the basis for a 90K service recommendation, given that timing belt failure at a minimum will take out the valves on the motor. Seems like it should be a .99p number given that there is usually no warning annd no visual inspection will determine if the timing belt is ready to fail normally (unless there is really severe wear/fraying). Mine jumped 6 teeth, but engine kept running. I shut it down ASAP but still trashed the head (bent valves).
