Is running out of gas bad for the car?

Not sure how the audi pumps will stand this nor the walbro, but Toaster is correct..
the internals are lubricated as the fuel pump flows fuel through it. This was also taught to us by Allen institute (back in ~88) when I was getting my fuel inj certificate. I had replaced a number of in-tank FI fuel pumps for cars that run dry and overheated the fuel pump when I used to work in the shop. We were also taught that on a rare occassion, there's a possibility of explosion if the pump runs dry, overheats with friction and ignites fumes in the tank. It most likely won't happen on today's vacuum sealed fuel systems. The only pump I've run dry is the TT due to a bad fuel gauge - embarassing in the bay bridge But in general, I wouldn't run an intank pump dry

I did it just about every weekend with the stock pump, never had a problem with it and only
changed it out since it was not going to move enough fuel for my 500+ hp. If the pump is dry its not like the car will keep running anyway and on our cars the pump cuts off once the engine shuts off since it is controlled by the ecu.
