K&N filter is ~ $40 and air intake will be ~ $180 and neither will give you that much gain. I have a 2.8 and threw in a K&N just for the hell of it but have heard from some various people that they liked the intake. In the end it's a matter of personal choice and what kind of gain you expect for your buck.

Default The K&N is not going to give you any real gains.

If you can find a intake that will supply cold air to the filter area and the heatshield blocks most all the heat from the turbo, then it will give you a good gain and a much better throttle response.

Default Membes of the 12v development forum have done some intake R&D which applies to all vehicles . .

The OEM intake system works pretty well at speed (because it creates positive air pressure at higher speeds), but you can mod it to significantly increase your air flow.

While we have the 2.8l air intake set-up it's fairly similar to the 1.8t set-up.
In addition to a high-flow K&N filter, I suggest that you consider some of things that us 12v'ers have done and seen in alternative to the cone filter sucking in hot engine bay air:

1. Custom Ram-air plate and baffle under the grill to direct cold air into the oem air inlet;
2. Custom pipe from under the bumper to a new hole in the air box to create the same ram-air effect;
3. MAF air inlet horn to smooth incoming air;
4. Take-out MAF screen restriction;
5. Bore MAF housing for greater flow;
6. Replace any rubber accordion-style hoses with smooth silicone or other smooth inner-surface hoses;
7. Heat reflecting tape/wrap on all air-passage hoses.

Default And even while the velocity stacks...

Havent seen "outstanding" dyno results, they still do what thier intended to do and do a good job of it. That along with the stage 2 TB's weve got in the pot, makes for a good setup with what you just listed. Cams will also contribute to a much higher overall HP gain.
