Default Sigh... Time to get a dipstick.

Currently in the middle of a 1200km road trip, which has been interrupted by a "min oil" warning in the DIS.
Pretty concerning since I had an oil change approximately 1 month ago, and it was still showing "max" about two weeks ago when I last checked.
Anyway, I checked the MMI and it said this:
Sigh... Time to get a dipstick.-27xwkro.jpg

I popped the hood and there's plenty of oil on the cap.. Not scientific I know, but I just wasn't convinced that the oil was low.

So I wait the two minutes, and check the MMI and it now says:

Sigh... Time to get a dipstick.-2njfswo.jpg

I'm convinced it's a bad sensor... Won't be able to see a dealer till I'm back home on Tuesday, but I bought a litre of Castrol Synthetic 5w30 at a rest stop, just in case.
First order of business when I get to my destination tonight will be to order that dipstick I've been hemming and hawing about for too long now.

Time to replace the oil level sensor. Had mine replaced as well. I'd suggest never going to add 1L at a time, rather smaller quantities (such as 250ml if that message pops up) and check the display again - it should show a little increase in the oil level. It's harder to remove extra oil if overfilled.

Best oil level sensor is a dipstick. ☺

My dealer says not to believe what I read on the internet. The computerized oil systems are infallible, and all of these stories are vicious lies from Audi haters.

Perhaps you could come by, park on his foot, and we could debate the matter at length?

Electronic sensors can go bad. Mechanical measurement devices rarely if ever do. (OK, I guess some idiot out there has bent his dipstick, but otherwise ... )

So he is arguing that personal experiences are not real ? He must have a particular sense of humor When mine failed - and was replaced by the dealer who knew about the issue, I searched about the issue on forums, Bmw's among other brands are also having issues with these sensors. Perhaps they are furnished by the same part marker and seems a new technology that has yet to be reliable.

As mentioned above, a dipstick will never lie (or die). I read on Bmw forums, owners that had these issues with the oil level sensor bough a dipstick for peace of mind

Well, if a highly trained, certified, factory authorized and endorsed Audi "agent" tells me that the dipstick with the bright yellow handle that is apparently sitting in my engine's dipstick tube, which cost about 3x what a conventional real dipstick should cost, isn't real? That it is just a hallucination, or a prank of some kind?

Would you believe HIM, or the unreliable, uncertified, unauthorized illusion in front of your eyes?

I'd rather keep the hood closed and not be bothered by these things. Yes, I can and have overhauled engines and I even own Plastigage strips. But part of the reason for a new car, was not to have to use them.

Who knew, an Audi came with a mandatory masters-level class on advanced philosophy and subjective illusions of the perceptory systems....I thought they just sold cars! (My bad.)

Funny stuff! Question: Do you leave yours in all the time? I am tempted to, but worry about heat from the engine bay damaging it. I just hang it on a nail on one of my garage walls.
