Maybe just one more test to confirm that the first one was valid? Just kidding....

Default 2.0T/3.0T "same or better" than 3.0TDI MPG? Not on average they won't

I'm also surprised that the TDI doesn't do so well with the fuel milage. I agree the torque fun is there but for most owners who don't even know what torque means are wasting a lot of money when they can just buy the 2.0/3.0 gas engine and do the same or better.
2.0T showing about 21.5 MPG average:

3.0T showing about 19.0 MPG average: (and very similar to 3.2 also shown there)

3.0TDI showing 27+ MPG average:

And similarly, the EPA ratings. Not unusually, the TDI tends to be doing better vs the EPA than the others.
2.0T: 20/28
3.0T: 18/26
3.0TDI: 24/31

I'll happily take my 19 mpg knowing how much faster the 3.0T is as compared to the TDI.

Most owners would never experience the difference.

Here's my comparo:

I'll take solace in the fact that it will take you 70k mi to make up fuel economy difference for the premium you paid for the TDI. Oh right, the TDI is about the driving experience, not the fuel economy.

Edit: I'll be getting a next gen Q7 TDI to replace my wife's Honda, so I'm not anti diesel

I purchased the adapter just in case I am in a remote location and that diesel pump only has the old style nozzle. Better prepared and safe than sorry...

FWIW.

Where'd you buy the adapter? I could see it being valuable in some cross country driving…

Why do non-TDI buyers assume people buy a diesel for the gas mileage? I never hear anyone say "Well, Bob you're going to spend $4,000 dollars more in gas since you bought that Camaro" yet when diesel or hybrid is mentioned, they automatically go to "It'll take you "X" years to recoup your savings …"

Maybe they bought the TDI because they liked it better.

Sounds like a valid reason to me.

This kind of back and forth is inevitable with the variety of engines now offered on the Q5. It probably happens with all brand in this situation.

A friend gave it to me - if it's not searchable by what's in the photo, I can check to see if it has a P/N on it.

And it also looks more like 50k miles to break even. Then there's savings every mile after that. I certainly plan to own my TDI longer than 50k miles, so only from that financial standpoint, it's a no brainer. Then consider both the resale value and demand will (almost definitely) be higher on the TDI. I'd argue that after any reasonable length of ownership, you'd be able to resell the TDI for the same difference over the 3.0T cost at purchase. So you'll recoup that when selling, which means you're saving on fuel from the first mile driven.

But as noted, that's just part of the equation. Having all this torque and balanced with the fuel efficiency is a win-win! As I've noted before, comparing my Q5 TDI to my A3 2.0T (FWD), my Q5 has more space, is more efficient on fuel, *and* is faster. Win! Win! Win!

Happy Weekend!

roughly looking at $2400 price diff from 3.0T and TDI and having them at 19mpg and 27mpg respectively, you can look at 21mpg and 29mpg solid purple line to see that for 100k miles, you'd save ~$4800, so in about 50k, you'd save the $2400 difference. Roughly.

This is using fuel prices around me that I captured over about 1 year period.
