This whole thread brings up one of my pet peeves about auto manufacturers. I understand having certain features as options that's logical. What I don't understand though is how they justify swapping things like screens based on options. Wouldn't it be cheaper and simpler for them to use the same screen regardless of what system is driving it? As someone else noted the drivers screen is not the full color one if you don't have nav, again whats the point? Why not just have the same screen there but obviously it doesn't show the nav options when they aren't installed.

All of this swapping of pieces has to cost more than just having a common component list.

I believe its not just the screen.. the whole thing is a unit with all the additional electronics for the rear view, Nav, HD Radio etc. It would not be very cost efficient for them to use the Nav hardware on a NON nav car.

Then there is a wow factor of the color screen which will help them up-sell

Indeed, it's the complete module which has been 'value engineered' for a particular trim level. You don't need a hi-def screen and the add'l electronics for text and those who don't want Nav would be over-paying.

The driver screen act as a second screen for additional Navi information. There is simply no need for the high resolution driver screen if there is no Navi info to display. The added cost of stocking 2 types of driver screens is probably less than putting high resolution driver screens on every trim.
