Default 2016 3.0 TDI OIL CONSUMPTION

I am new to the diesel and have been loving it. However, I have noticed at 3800 Kms that the MMI oil indicator is showing about 1/4 down on its scale. I know this should only represent what, 250 ml or so, am not terribly concerned yet.

I was particularly diligent during break in and tried to seat rings by having he motor pull at medium throttle on hills etc. I don't think the engine has ever seen or been redlined yet, doesn't seem to be any point it pulls so well from 2 to 3500.

The only thing I have noticed is a slight roughness,or droning at idle or very low rpms when cruising on highway at slow speed. Perhaps a diesel characteristic ?

Because it quickly goes away when asking for more power. Then it's very smooth. And I love it.

My question therefore is, is the engine behaving as per normal? Is some oil use age normal for these engines? What have others observed?

Any and all advice appreciated in advance.

Cheers

Don't worry about a bit of oil consumption during break-in.Mine consumed about a 1/2 Ltr.but after the first oil change it stopped and now uses 0 between 15k km.changes currently at 60k kms.The "roughness" you're detecting will also likely become a distant memory. The only time I feel a bit of vibration is at a stop when it's really cold out eg. @-20c.Enjoy your great machine.

Yeah, TDIs, at least the newest cars, are not known for oil consumption.

My 2015 used about a 1 1/4 quarts between 5-15K service, a 1 1/2 quarts between the 15-25K service. So I had the dealership do a Oil Consumption check at the 25K service...waiting to see what happens next.

I noticed my wife's 2014 used almost a quart between her 15K to 25K service. However, haven't asked for an oil consumption check on it yet.

Now I am going by the electronic oil gauge in the MMI. I am seriously thinking about getting an oil dipstick.

My advice to you is....if your worried about it. Have the dealer do an oil consumption check on your next service.

Diesels are known to burn oil. It's normal. That's why they are referred to as Oil Burners.

My Q5 usually burns a quart between oil changes. My 335d also burns about a quart as well. Diesels can run on oil. Runaway diesels engines when the turbo leaks oil will keep running till they burn out all the oil. It's pretty cool, doesn't happen anymore with chokes to prevent it but it used to.

I needed to add a quart between my 5000 and 15000 mile services. Haven't had to add since then. Possible car wasn't filled completely at 5000 service. I am now at 30000 miles.

Ours is a 2015 TDI, and we did not have any issues.

I would not worry about it yet. Mine consumed a quart or so during the break-in period and I too was worried. Since I have had no problems and it consumes very little oil between changes.
