I agree with you. It feels strange when I have to go to a loaner car, where I have to use an actual key to start the car. One gets spoiled never having to fumble looking for the key to open the door, or start the car.

I was at the dealer On Friday...
To grease the gears of papa sun roof.
As well they washed the Q
Here we go again ....Today the doors on the Q do not open.
I'm sure it is once again one of the door sensors. They pressure cleaned the Q and then washed it and dryed it .
I'll give them a buzz on Monday

I had a similar system on my Toyota for the last 4 years. Worked a little bit different than my Q5, but similar. Toyota used more of a button than a touch sensor, which probably is more reliable in the long run.
However, I will agree that a weak battery will cause issues. Actually locked a key in the car once cause the battery was too weak to send the signal.
Also, i've found over the years that where you put the key can be an issue. For instance, some times if its in a pocket with a phone, other keys and junk, the signal can be weak to the car. Results in that embarrassing 'grab the handle' motion 3-4 times till the alert goes off.
Even with the Q, I've found myself reaching for the door handle faster than the system recognizes the key.
Also, my Toyota had an unlock sensor on the rear liftgate. Haven't found one on the Q yet.

Mine randomly stopped working one day, then started working another. It's now not working again. To be specific, I can lock the car by touching the door sensor, and unlock the hatch, but cannot unlock the doors without manually pressing the button on the keyfob.

While washing the car, the key was in my pocket and the system did go on and off (obviously i'm not telling my dealer that), but could that have shorted a fuse or burn the sensor?

Mine is behaving the same way at the moment but it has failed in the past only to "magically" work again after a few days - seems to coincide with spray washing the car. I wonder if there is an emerging recall here.
