Default Am considering LoJack for new Q5

I will be ordering a Q5 once pricing is available. The cost of a LoJack installation is $695.00, but for a nearly 60k auto, is it money wisely spent? LoJack does appear to be the system that police departments recommend. Yea or nay?

Default More generally, you might look at theft loss rates on Q5's

On the more sedate Audis I have owned, theft rate is almost zero. Might be different on Q5's if it follows an A4 pattern though. Kind of doubt it--these aren't kid cars like Hondas, Toyotas, Scions, etc. that get stolen for constant rebuilds and mods, they haven't aged as much either and don't have some "gotta have" expensive tuner parts like a hot engine, hot brakes, etc.

Underneath you already have stuff like the basic (ignored) alarm and probably more importantly the chip key to slow the bad guys down. In my calm suburbia area, I wouldn't begin to bother. If I were in a high crime area, maybe different but then I would try to garage it too.

In 2010 (the latest data I can find), there were only 7 MY 2010 Audi Q5s stolen in the country. The theft rate was near the bottom at 0.3713 thefts per 1,000 vehicles. Compare that to a car with an average theft rate such as the BMW 3 series which had .8802 thefts per 1,000 vehicles. I would skip the lo jack.

I've always subscribed to the theory if someone steals my car, I don't want it back.

Just an excuse to upgrade, I say.

We all love our cars, but if they get stolen or totaled, or whatever the case may be, there will always be another ride waiting to become our next great vehicle.

This. You don't want a theft recovery on your title.

Probably not worth the $695. LoJack works great if a kid takes your car, kids are not taking most Audis. I might have a different answer if you were buying an R8. LoJack does not work against professional thieves as they'll drive around the corner and have the LoJack disabled in five minutes anyway. Save the money or buy the B&O for about the same amount.

No idea why someone would spend the money on such a thing. Unless they don't intend to insure the car, in which case they have bigger problems.

I am sorry I can't agree with that kind of reasoning. LoJack is akin to putting metal bars on one's first floor windows. To install them or not depends on the crime rate of your neighborhood--the likelihood of a break-in. Even though the insurance primium will be affected, it is a still different consideration.

My $0.02.
