My 2010 manual stated that the keys were recharged in the ignition and recommended that I rotate the keys every once in a while to ensure they don't go dead.

Do you have the Prestige package with keyless start?
As I do this recharging option is silly as I do not have to insert my key.

My Dealer had said the same thing to me
But he was in correct
The battery itself is not a rechargeable battery.

I have a Start button on my console, I never used my Key to start the Q5 .....Always the button in the console.
Until my wife was getting messages in the dash that said battery low in key .....
My dealer had said then to use the key to run the Q with the key in the dash to recharge it.
My wife continued to get messages battery low in Key.
I called the dealer told him what was going on.... what we did ... what they told us to do we did...
We had to purchase a new Battery for the Key
Problem resolved

Did you receive a 'notice' on your dash telling you the battery was going low/dead? (My hubbys MSP3 does so wonder if our Q5's do...)
Mine warned me about a low battery after 2 years of ownership.

I do not understand why the real issue about the battery that costs $ 5-6.

It is normal that the battery can not recharge because there is no contact through which to charge the battery.
I would like to know who and where to read that the battery can be recharged

You have pictures here to be removed and replaced the battery
