brakes and mileage questions

I guess I was more concerned with whether or not to wait until the sensor goes off. I would like to avoid having to buy rotors. And why I need brakes at say 30,000,miles if the shop is correct in their assessment? i know it varies by driving conditions but I baby the car and it just seems they should last longer.
Do I need to do this work at dealer? I imagine they will be more expensive and surely they will hit me with the old "need new rotors based on manufacturers specs"
Shop here wanted 289 for the rear pads installed and they said if done on time, rotors should be fine.

Rotors take a lot of abuse, and are not that expensive. I always change them out when I do brakes, as the bigger cost (to me at least) is the time to get the vehicle up on jack stands, the wheels off, calipers off, etc. Doing the rotors adds maybe a few minutes, max, plus the cost of the rotors.
Then again, I'm doing it myself, and a shop might charge enough extra that you'd want to avoid doing this.
Lastly, I think a lot of places warn you way early. I see no reason to do brakes until the pads are almost gone. Maybe if you were going on a big trip or something, but for around town, go ahead and get all the life out of them you can. The sensors are cheap to replace.
