Clarification regarding iPod AMI cable

So interestingly, my '14 Q5 TDI came with the red grommet cable, which everyone seems to say is the better one.
I have the red+blue, but no ipod (yet) to test/verify with. Couple quick questions:
- Will they both charge the ipod?
- My salesman was under the impression that the red grommet cable may not work with older ipods. Is this the case?
- Can the MMI access both playlists and the "smart playlists"?
I'm looking to pick up a really cheap ipod touch or even ipod classic... something with at least 16gb (ideally 32+) storage... plan to leave it in the glovebox 100% of time except for loading new songs on it...

If it's compatible with the appropriate AMI cable, it will charge the iPod/iPhone.
He is correct that some older iPods will not work with the red grommet cable. There are advantages to the red grommet vs. the older blue grommet AMI cable, i.e., viewing video and album art.
Here's details:

I got a 32GB 2nd gen iPod Touch on eBay for $75. It works fine with the red grommet cable (e.g., album art is displayed). Steve

I'm using a retired iphone 4 as my stand alone ipod. Because it has wifi, I'm able to load songs in it while it's sitting in the car inside my garage. If your house has wifi, getting a wifi ipod (ipod touch) maybe be something to think about and will rarely have to take it out of the glovebox, ever!

Any reason I would realistically want to choose between iPod touch 2Gen vs 3Gen vs 4Gen? Given that it'll be plugged into the AMI cable 100% of the time apart from connecting to and syncing with computer....

Not really for just playing music in the car. I would think the capacity would be more important.

I had an old 2nd gen iPod touch sitting around. It works fine with the blue cable, but is hit or miss with the red one. About half the time I get the "device not supported" message, and have to disconnect and reconnect it.
I wish there were better playlist support on the SD cards.

I use old Touches historically too. But there are also literally probably ten million old iPhones around by now collecting dust in drawers that have gotten even beyond kids' hand me downs but that function well as players and have decent memories. What I am starting to convert to with another Audi and old phone donors. Broken screens, bluetooth, mics, ear sound, etc, all don't matter as long as it plays and connector still works.
