Made an appointment for the next day, then the next morning it started working again. So I called and canceled the appointment. Service guy claims moisture froze it (temps below zero for several days) but being in the heated garage overnight probably thawed it out. Let's hope so!

My 2010 F150 did something similar. It started out as being intermittent at starting. Then it would start and get locked in high speed. After a couple of visits to the dealer, the service tech ran the fan switch up and down a few times where it would stick in high speed occasionally. Ended up being the fan control module was bad.
I know, Ford, not Audi, but something to consider if it continues happening.

Thanks for the reply. Automotive controls are not all that different except that Ford vs. Audi means that if it's an Audi fan control, it will cost about $1200 to repair
