23 MPG combined is 10 MPG better than I am getting right now with my 4.2 V8 Touareg. This is encouraging news. Now I hope someone can chime in who has towed with his Q5 and comment on its tow capabilities.

I hope everyone doesn't compare these European fuel economy numbers with the US numbers. The European test "courses" are at slower speeds, warmer engines and other criteria that result in higher fuel economy numbers. They can be over optimistic by as much as 25-30%. The German equivalent of a gallon is a US gallon. No conversion is necessary. But, if the British fuel economy is used then then imperial gallon has to be converted to the US gallon as previously indicated.

No way will the 3.0T get 28 mpg highway. The A8 gets this and it has a Cd of .26. The Q5 Cd is .33. I base this assumption on this link:

Mileage depends, to some degree, in what state you live. I live in California and they put so much crapola in the fuel it is amazing. If I fuel up in Oregon or Idaho I get about 2 miles per gallon increase. This is especially true of diesel.

Default Towing a 12 foot double axle trailer with Q5

I tow a 12 foot enclosed double axle V-nosed trailer with my 2.0 Q5. Trailer weight is 2000lbs, and I add another 700lbs or so of karts and gear. Acceleration is very good, and highway stability has never been a problem. The one slightly shocking thing is the fuel economy, which is 13mpg at 60mph and 10mpg at 70mpg. Considering I am essentially pulling an eight foot high barn door behind the vehicle this should not be a surprise but do wonder how much better the diesel would fare in these circumstances.

I went from 2009 Q5 3.2 to 2012 Touareg TDI.

Towing 1100 miles from Kansas City to Salt Lake City on I 70.

Towing 2500 lbs trailer with Q5 on flat going anything from 65 to 80 was ok but any hill and lack of torque made me use the tiptronic to keep rpm's up to keep the speed.

With Touareg TDI I don't need to touch the tiptronic and the torque does its thing.

Some says to use 3/4 of vehicle rated capacity, which on Q5 means 3300 lbs max...

The whoops on I 70 made me thank myself that balanced the load above the trailer axle and kept the tongue load around 200 lbs by the tongue scale.

Thanks for the input guys. I live in Hawaii and there will be very little highway towing and the 3.0T has almost 60 ft. lbs more torque than the 3.2 V6.

My Touareg has been a great SUV but it's 8 years old and it's time to replace it soon. I like the Q5 and I think it will be able to meet my needs.

And from our 'test' in Hawaii two weeks ago both Maui and Kauai seemed like ALL speed limits were VERY slow which didn't matter since the traffic was bumper to bumper were we happened to venture

we too are considering the 3.0T - curious when it will be available and how it will be received...
