I have been examining all those glossy pics of the Q5 for so long I though I knew what it looked like but I just got to see one in the flesh today at Grange Motors (thats Southside Co. Dublin) and guess what... Its not a little Q7.
That was the biggy for me, its a complete Car Truck Crossover SUV call it what you will, it is a seperate entity.
No they havent just shortened a Q7 Its got a more squat agressive stance, no big overhangs no extra space but neither is it lacking any. This car is aimed at a different family and the sales team were only too pleased to tell me this family will be going camping or kayaking or just driving off the tarmac.
Fresh back from getting their Off Road jollies in Spain courtesy of Audi AG I was reassuringly told by Team Leader, Cliff (with a wry smile) "I will probably enjoy pottering around town in it too"
It's well, neat, fits like a glove to sit in, no pretending you are the chauffeur in this one. This is not the Limo its the beater. Whats your daily driver? mines a Q5, that sort of car. While obviously different it would only take me about 10 seconds to find everything. Its a Q
I think it may be just the right bigness for a recession. Like all Audis it's tidy roundy oh yeah "Beautifully Engineered" I knew I heard that somewhere, makes sense now.
The 2.0 TDI I was looking at returns 6.7 Litres per 100 kms (I think thats 45 mpg) and 0-100kms in 9.6 seconds.
The 3.0 TDI will pop you to 100kms in 6.5 thats more like it but they dont expect to sell a lot of those around here. Good! My Q7 can blow off a Q5.
Lil touches

I like the seat releases just inside the trunk No stretching or reaching...You pull it works.
The fuel filler has no release you push it in and it opens like a TV cabinet...Great until you use it. I can imagine scratches or greasy marks on those forever. Does that mean every time I go for a fill the "Fuel Injection Technician" will be fingering my bodywork" Prod Prod "get off, this is a Q7 sheeeesh"
But after googling it, olging it, touching it peering under all the lids we finally found the best bit. Its in the headlamps just under the last LED DRL in matching style

LIkes.
I like it!
The wheels look huge compared to the Q7
The roofrack is neater.
Driving position and dash.
Parking Brake.
LED taillights and DRLs
Dislikes.
Silly fuel filler release.
Brakes look cheap.
i suppose the next thing will be to drive one. The guys are going on an offroad day soon;-)

we were all poking at this thing and it took a couple of goes as it needs quite a prod to move it. Maybe it was just a bit "Fresh".
Would you say it is an acceptable system overall?
Does it lock in any way?
TIA
