You should be fine if you have all seasons on there. We are in NH and ran the all seasons and they were fine.

I had one of the best all seasons on my S-Line Q5 with 20" rims. I was at Steamboat for their first snow two years ago - Driving back to Fort Collins over Rabbit Ears Pass was scary. I never lost traction but the car felt squirrely. Later a few months I drove to see my daughter in Seattle and hit a horrid snow storm (200 miles at 40mph max) - again never lost traction but never felt like I could get over the white knuckle driving especially when hitting black ice in Oregon .

The next season I bought 19" rims and snow tires. Much better. lots more confidence.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I'm sold on the snow tires mainly due to their superior stopping ability in the winter. I saw one test result that showed 2 identical vehicles (Porsche Cayenne) stop from 30mph in light snow at a distance of 102 feet equipped with all-season tires vs. 61 feet equipped with winter tires.

Now I need to decide 17" or 18"? The OEM Audi Q5 winter wheel package uses 17" wheels - does anyone know why? I noticed a basic 17" package on tire rack is nearly $300 cheaper than an 18" package too!

FWIW...I have the BLIZZAK 235/60/18's with some nice wheels. They worked GREAT in the snow we had last year. I see no need to go to 17's. I'd even bet you could go 19 inch too, but you cannot see potholes in snow so I would not risk it.

  • Cheaper tire, more choices
  • Cheaper wheel
  • More impact resistance, less damage-prone with taller sidewall

We finally got some good weather on Sunday so I put on the wheels I bought. They look similar to my stock 18" rims and are almost an exact knock-off of the Infiniti G37 rims. They are wrapped with Pirelli Scorpion Ice + Snow tires. My only complaint so far is that they're noticeably louder than my stock Michelins.

That will no longer be a complaint after your first drive in inclement weather. Enjoy, and keep your loved ones safe

No, but I can vouch for Dunlop Winter Sport tires. Excellent in snow and ice; but quiete on dry pavement.
