I got my RS4 from the Penske Dealership in Scottsdale and they were very efficient and the fees were all reasonable. Never saw anything that was questionable. Got me out the door from my 6AM flight in from Denver and on the road by 11AM even though the AZ website was down that issued license. Had a great drive back to Fort Collins (14 hour drive)

Sure it's legit...for them to ask for it. Here in eastern VA it's called a "processing fee". It's what they charge for a $10.00/hour girl to go to the DMV and go straight to the front of the line and register 3 weeks worth of car sales. "Process" takes about 10 minutes per car and equates to a tidy profit. Some dealers just won't back off of the charge and some will if you flatly say you aren't paying it and they can back figure it out of the OTD price.

I used the edmunds doc fee link to make sure the $45 doc fee in NY state was legit.
AZ = no limit
NC = no limit
obviously it different from state to state, but basically doc/processing fees are all for profit.

Well, I got the dealer to halve the Doc Fee of $489 to $245.
Then, they came up with two more fees relating to "prepping the car" which totalled about $500. (Will these guys ever stop?) I told them that the other dealers weren't charging those fees (which is true), and that I thanked them for their time, because I was heading to another dealer. Quickly, those "prepping fees" disappeared and we signed a deal.
Now, I'm thinking, "What surprise fees will surface when I go to pick up the Q5 in October?"
Looking forward to owning a Q5, hopefully.

My first new Audi was a 1973 100LS picked up at the Factory.

When I bought my last Audi, the business manager at the dealer try to charge me a $100 proccessing fee for the loan, I refuse and we went with another bank. You can bet that the dealer get a cut of that loan proccessing fee.

When I moved from CA (title closing state) to MA (lawyer closing state) I got totally screwed. I set up our HELOC with the bank the same time as the mortgage and the lawyer charged us another $500 to process the HELOC. What a bunch of bs. I didn't ask them to do anything with it but voila there it was.

wow i spoke to several dealers when purchasing and the only fee i saw over and over was destination. some guy tried to tell me that the destination fee is ALWAYS added after the negotiation and when i told him that i had at least 3 other offers that said "destination included" he scoffed
needless to say i bought elsewhere
needless to say i bought elsewhere

Eh I wouldn't say he's 100% correct but that it depends on your starting point for the negotiation. Yes it's legal every car has it. I thought it was funny I could get a Toyota truck from the fremont plant down the street from where I lived and I'd still have to pay it. But... I've never negotiated a car price and then had the destination added on. If you're going down from the window sticker price it's already included. If he showed you an invoice price that didn't include it and you were negotiating based on that number then yes it would have to be added after you settle on a number.
