drivetrain howl

I've noticed a howl from the drivetrain which has been getting progessivley worse over the 9600 miles i've put on it. It's been slow enough that by now it's really loud and shocking to others. My wife even said that it's harder to hear the phone via the bluetooth now.
It's present all the time when power is being transmitted through the drivetrain but gets to a contstant at highway speed. If I back off the gas completely the sound completely disappears, if I touch the gas I can make the howl go on and off. No difference when shifting in and out of sport mode. Kind of the same senario if a vehicle has a bad U-joint and the vibration comes and goes when power is off or on.
We drove a new on the lot Q5 today and both my wife and I could not believe how quiet it was. We are dropping it off Monday for evaluation and for a drive with the sevice manager.
Anyone else with a howl from their rear ?

How's this for an update......
Replacing the entire rear differential. It chewed itself to bits inside.
They are also relating the transmission crap shifting to the differential meltdown.
keep you posted.
Awesome, wicked awesome
