Default duplicate SQ5 exhaust note with a 3.0 TDI?

Is it possible to get anywhere close to the SQ5's exhaust note rumble with a 3.0 TDI? Can I just use the orignal SQ5 full exhaust or do i need to go aftermarket?

Very happy with my TDI except the exhaust sound. Would have bought a SQ5, but needed the mpg, already put on 18K in 10month.

Not exactly sure how a SQ5 sounds.

I will tell you...where there is a will, there is a way. I am sure there is a way to cut and weld (something like that) the SQ5 exhaust mufflers and sound resonator on your Q5.

I have a Magnaflow exhaust and Stock Airbox mod done on mine....it has really opened the car up, not just in performance but sound as well.

I don't have any data to back this up yet, but working on it.

I'd be careful with this though, as it can mess with catalyzer/NOx trap on TDI.

I read a post somewhere about the SQ5 active exhaust being retrofitted on a car without it. I've seen posts about coupon codes on exhausts and they make a TDI version. The videos of the SQ5 TDI's in Europe don't sound anything like the 3.0T.

A lot of the sound characteristics with a V6 will be determined by angle and cylinder dimensions as well as BOTH the intake AND exhaust. Induction sound makes up a lot of what you hear from the drivers seat.

On top of that the much higher compression ratio will likely effect the sound as well as the valve timing changes and the exhaust pulses even with a turbo will be a little sharper, more pronounced.

Finally, the operating range in RPM is a LOT, LOT different. This again goes back to valve timing.

Heres's the specs:

Petrol 3.0TFSI:
2,998 cubic centimetres (182.9 cu in) 90° V6 engine; bore x stroke: 84.5 by 89.1 millimetres (3.33 in × 3.51 in), stroke ratio: 0.95:1 - undersquare/long-stroke, 499.7 cc per cylinder, 90 mm (3.54 in) cylinder spacing, compression ratio: 10.5:1

3.0TDI:
90° V6 engine, Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) turbodiesel; 2,967 cubic centimetres (181.1 cu in); bore x stroke: 83.0 by 91.4 millimetres (3.27 in × 3.60 in), stroke ratio: 0.91:1 - undersquare/long-stroke, 494.5 cc per cylinder, compression ratio 17.0:1

So the TDI is a slightly longer stroke, but same 90 degree angle (ie a V8 with 2 cylinders lopped off and a counterbalancer added).

Next consider one si supercharged, so the exhaust can be true dual exhaust, althought depending on the catalytic converters used and crossover pipes to aide low RPM torque, it might not realyl be a dual exhaust.

The TDI is turbocharged so that will absorb a lot of the sound. I'm again not sure if it's using 2 completely separate turbos or on common turbo charger with variable vane pitch (cheaper).

Bottom line... I don;t think you can get both to sound the same. It will have some similar mechanical notes, but totally different induction and exhaust sound.

Record the sound of an SQ5 and then buy two big fat speakers and place on back seats. Turn up volume and off you go...alternatively be thankful because that nicer exhaust sound also means horrible MPG!!

Most of the sound you hear inside the SQ5 is generated electronically by the Soundaktor. I must admit it's addictive but I don't know if you can retrofit it to a TDI. Steve

It must be mostly artificial because the regular 3.0T was one of the quietest drive trains I've even driven.

It doesn't sound anything like it in real life either, the SQ5 TDI exhaust is a huge let down once you've heard the SQ5 TFSI.
