Default Failed engine @ 74,000 mi. 2012 Q5: what now?

I was on a trip and the car started running rough . Audi dealer checked and noted failed engine metal shavings. Burned valve. 74,000 miles This is past the engine warranty. Is there anything I can do with Audi?

What country are you writing from? Previous known issues with this vehicle?

My gut feel is that your engine is consuming oil in large amounts. Am I correct? If yes, you should have been recording the rate of engine oil loss with you dealer. In the absence of any such record, it would be difficult and almost impossible to get Audi to provide some form of assistance past the vehicle's warranty period.

Yes you are correct. It was consuming what I thought was a lot of oil but assumed from what I read this was normal. I have records of all previous oil changes.

I guess it is too late to ask but around how much oil did your car consume? The factory oil consumption tolerance limit is 0.5 liters per 1,000 kms or roughly 0.8 quart per 1,000 miles.

Alas, oil change records won't be enough. To establish a history and rate of oil consumption, you should've brought it with your dealer back when you noticed it was consuming oil. They would have done the Stage 1 fix first as soon as they would have established that it was indeed consuming too much oil that what is standard. A Stage 2 fix would follow if the excessive oil consumption problem persisted. In the absence of any excessive oil consumption history, you will be on your own here. You can try talking to your dealer about asking Audi for assistance but I won't get my hopes up too high.

You next recourse if Audi won't help you out is to seek out an independent mechanic and inquire about the cost of a rebuilt engine and the associated labour for the swap out. There's lots of used 2.0L TFSI engines available for around $3000 to $4000 or even less.
