The Weathertech mats are pretty thin so overall height does not change much at all. The OEM mats have nice deep tread, so they work great for catching water/snow/grime and afford good shoe traction for passengers.
I've done the same in all my cars. I buy weathertech to catch the stuff the OEM's let by. In my pickup truck the Weathertech actually drain out the door sill quite easily. I was skeptical of this at first but it really does work. The only issue I have had in the past was in a Jeep Wrangler where the condensation from too much snow being left in the weathertech's soaked the rug underneath. No leaks, just condensation. Solution: empty them once a week and the problem went away. I bought the WeatherTech's for the AUDI as well and will do the same as DrV, same as I have done for years and it works a charm. In the summer the Weathertech's come out and the OEM's will be the sole carpet protection.

WT covers the bottom of the deadpedal, but since Q5 has its own plastic piece cover, WT "works" OK

BTW, rec'd my weathertech mats today. They fit like a glove as per the norm except that the factory forgot to include the button snap for each side of the mats. For some reason the front mats only had one snap. An oversight as there is a hole for it. I sent an email tonight to WT asking for the 2 missing snaps to be sent so will wait to see what comes back.

I got my front/rear weathertech's about 2 months ago. took only 2 weeks and the front mats did have the 2 attachment snaps.

FWIW, I definitely like the weathertechs for the winter - salt, water, and all. good thing it pools the water and doesn't allow it to get to the carpeting (though I'm sure the OEM winter mats appear to do the same).

For other seasons, I use the heavy duty OEM cloth mats. Nice trim and Q5 emblem to boot.
