Stopped by my favorite Shell station in Beloit, WI last week and was shocked to see a $.60 spread between regular and Super. Been filling it up there for10 years and the price spread was always $.24-.28 between the gas grades. I also passed 3 or 4 stations in Madison, WI with price spreads over $.50 a gallon.
Just couldn't do it in my Q5 - put in 5 gallons of 89 to get me home. My local Shell has been at the $.30 spread for the last few years, and now that seems cheap. There is a Mobil station close-by that has had a posted spread of $.67 between the grades since last Spring.

The last two times I put gas in the Q5 in the suburban Chicago area, the spread between regular and premium was $.50/gallon. I haven't checked recently but don't imagine that's it's changed much.
I'm running mid-grade right now (2.0 engine).

As of today in New Jersey:
Regular - $3.11
Mid - $3.39
Premium - $3.53
Diesel - $3.71
Compared to NYC:
Regular - $3.71
Mid - $3.99
Premium - $4.09
Diesel - $4.35
The gap between regular and premium is usually 30 cents here to but lately it's been a bit more

I have also noticed this change in the Chicagoland Area. Last year, the spread was $.20-.30 p/gallon but now it is $.50.

87-93 is still about 30 cents here (usually 28 is common), though some stations are 50 or so for some reason (only some). 87 is around $3.01, placing 93 at approximately $3.31, and diesel is around $3.69 (finally coming down a little, was sitting at $3.79 for a long time there).

I think the price variances just depend on the time of year. I'm sure these companies have computers that calculate the prices based on complex algorithms. With that being said, I filled up at my local Mobil this weekend:
$4.05 Premium
$3.99 Plus
$3.59 Regular
46 cent difference between Premium and Regular
Compare that with Hess today:
$3.64 Premium
$3.34 Regular
Only a 30 cent difference.

This time of year diesel is generally 10-20 cents above premium.
In the summer time, diesel can be 10-20 cents below premium on average.

Not sure if this guy really wants to sell the super grade. This is about the biggest gap I've seen. This Mobil station has been at $.50 - $.55 more per gallon for most of the year.
