First of all, the OLD 3G MMI, found on some 2012 and older models, which can be identified by two rows of 4 buttons on each side for function. The NEWER 3G+ MMI, which exist in some 2012 and newer models, can be identified by two rows of 2 buttons on each side instead, are completely different.

Also the interfaces are different. The older 3G has the "status icons" and clock located on the center bottom of the screen, while the new 3G+ has them on the right hand bottom of the screen.

That being said, the OLDER 3G MMI has very limited function. Such as lack of Bluetooth A2DP support and lack of proper playback codec for many different video formats. Thus the reason why the 2012 A6 CAN play some formats due to the newer 3G+ MMI system while the 09-12 Q5s has the older 3G MMI system.

Hmm I never tried this...

I own Audi Q5 2013(newcomer ) so mine should work.

Does anyone know what video format is the best? Or does any avi(even HD) work?

The consensus is that no, your 2009 cannot play video files.

But... what about my 2013? To test, I put three video files on an SD card:
  1. MKV file with H.264 video and AC3 audio... doesn't show up at all in the MMI when viewing the folder
  2. MP4 file with H.264 video and MPEG4 AAC audio... shows up, but becomes greyed out when I try to play it
  3. AVI with XviD video and MP3 audio... plays fine

So yes, a 2013 can play video files, although the supported formats are a bit limited. Now please excuse me while I go sit in the garage and watch a movie...

After loads of testing, I was able to play movie files on my 2013 Q5.

I used Freemake Video Converter.

Here are the parameters I used from the software.

File type : AVI
Frame Size : 720 x 480
Video Codec : MPEG4
Frame rate : 30 fps
Bitrate Type : Auto
Audio Codec : MP3
Channels : Stereo
sample rate : 48000 Hz
Bitrate : 320 Kbps

Audi MMI Play videos from SD card!!!!!!! (Solution) - YouTube[/url]
Buy:

On video is Q5 MMI MY2013 -2016 NOT 2009-2011

This is written in 2013 for Q5 MY2009-2011 in that time had not supported video from SD card and I'm not sure even today that it supports although it has a new version of FW

FYI Audi MMI M2013 supports video from SD card, read the owner's manual

In every state I've ever lived in, it is illegal to play a movie that is visible to the driver if the car is not parked. Are you folks actually watching movies while you're driving?
