Decided to try the simpler route of using an SD card instead of dedicated iPod. No go. It only reads about half the songs. No, none of them are DRM'd -- they are all iTunes Plus 256kbit ".m4a" format. And it's totally random -- half the songs on an album will work, others will be "this file is corrupted and cannot play." Of course, my computer says the tracks are fine.
So, back to deciding if I'm going to use a dedicated iPod or mod my cable to use BT.

SO, I installed iOS 5 last night and Pandora now plays! I was Jailbroken, but did a factory restore before installing. I also do not get the "this device not optimized" alert any more. All the more reason to have the Iphone in my armrest!
