Default Long Startup/Cold Start

Hi AudiWorld,

This is officially my first post. I am a new Audi owner, first time Audi owner. So excited. I purchased a new 2014 Audi Q5 TDI in Brilliant Black about a month ago. I love this vehicle. The MPG rates are insane. I am thrilled to have this car. After a week of having the Q5 (which is garage kept), I began noticing a long start-up. My wife immediately asked me what was going on, all I could say is I don't know.

The weather has been fairly mild in the DC/MD/VA area over the last few weeks. The lowest it's gone down is into the mid 40's. But the garage stays around 70 degrees.

Is this normal? I can't find anything in this forum or in any forum about delayed start up. It doesn't shut off nor does it fail to start. I start it using the push button start and it stays cranking until it fires (i want to estimate it takes a few seconds, but it definitely not as fast as your typical vehicle). No smoke, no dashboard alert indicating something is wrong. It's happening almost every day.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

My first thought was the glow plug delay specially if in the 40, but I noticed that you mention that it takes a long time cranking. The glow plug delay its a 1 or maybe 2 second delay in start..... meaning that when you press the start button nothing happens..... then it starts.

I can tell you that my does not do that...... completely the oposite. It starts fast .....except for the glow plug delay if its been outside and its below 50's ambient temp.

Take it in and have the dealership take a look.....

Please report the outcome.

Hmmmm. Mine fires immediately. If your engine is turning over for several seconds before starting, I'd recommend calling the service department, discussing it, and likely take it in to have them check it out.

Thanks everyone. I called the service department at the dealership. I made an appointment and will drop off tonight. Hope to update tomorrow or once I have further information.

Thanks

Update - I took it into to be serviced, left it at the night drop. Called in the AM and Service Manager told me he personally went out and started the car in the AM. He did notice the longer crank start but was leaning towards it being normal in the diesel engine. I was not convinced. He remembered one of his guys saying the A6 TDI had something similar happen to it as they took it off the truck and check in the vehicle before it hit the sales floor.

He asked me to call back in the afternoon. I did. They decided to keep it another day. They opted to take all TDI models and do cold starts. They had mixed reviews...half started right up, others had the longer crank time. So they opened a ticket with Audi so they can gather feedback from other dealers and Audi. No service bulletins, or any other advisory since our cars are so new. So it's a waiting game for the moment. I will keep everyone posted.

Thanks

Update - Audi dealer just called. Since they opened the ticket with Audi they have been getting similar reports. They are keeping my car for a few more days, into next week. They said a Audi Product Specialist is coming to look at my Q5 and someone else's Q7 that is doing the same thing. At least they are looking into the issue.

Anyone have any experience with these Audi Product Specialist?

Default Not having any issues....

Please keep us posted.

I currently have my vehicle outside overnight, temps into the high 40s, nothing really cold. I haven't noticed any cold start delays or long crank cycles. Will probably be rotating this into the garage in a few weeks. Garage is not heated, but usually stays above freezing during winter, when overnight temps can drop into 20s or lower.

I hope it works out OK for you.

I've noticed if my TDI has been outside in the 50's (nothing really colder yet...) it just takes a couple seconds after pushing the start button before anything happens. No cranking or anything, then it just starts.
FYI.

Its a very good thing that the product specialist is comming to visit the dealership. They are regional experts with lots of power, knowledge and expertice.

Audi is extremely interested in the TDI to be a flawless product specially version 2 of the 3.0 v6..... I dont even have to ask next week if your car is going to get fix correctly....

I had an air leak comming from the steering wheel gasket via the firewall, and thats how I learned about the efforts that they are going. In my case it was already documented (today its a TSB)

Enjoy,

Pedro
