how did you decide on which to remove / replace ?

Did you do it in stages until you found the tone you wanted ?

as you know I replaced the two rear silencers....
and it is better, as heard in my signature tag,
but if taking out one more silencer would do even better

First, I wanted to get the most performance and a low deep tone sound.

With Turbo engines, You get the most HP increase with large least restrictive exhaust system (doesn't apply to normally aspirated engines). So I went with a straight through muffler like the Magnaflow.

The 2.0t Q5 has four mufflers, and since I'm installing a middle muffler, I decided to remove the Primary with an assumption that three mufflers were going to be silent enough. I did it all in on shot.

I looked through the primary muffler and it's not a straight through design. So there's a little bit of restriction there if I left it.

I'm estimating an increase of 13hp/13trq. Similar to the awe-tuning exhaust system.
