Default Nail In Tire--Too Close To Patch

Just discovered this nail in the rear-passenger side tire. Do you think it's too close to patch?

I had nearly new a tire with a nail closer to the "corner" than that. One tire shop that fixes flats for free said it couldn't be patched. Ordered a new tire from Tire Rack. Installer said he could patch the one with the nail, no sweat. He did. No problems!

Default Depends on who you go to.

Some will do it, some will be really by the book and say they won't do anything beyond the outermost lateral water channel. Yours doesn't look that far out to where the debates often begin.

Had one recently on a tire much closer to the edge than that--right at the point it starts the rounded corner. Guy hemmed and hawed a bit but did it, and fine since.

I had one similar and went to a Firestone Center. They put a plug in it and was successful.....give it a go...

You may be able to use a plug with that, but definitely not a patch. In order to apply patches you have to grind off the inside surface to make it smooth. You are not supposed to grind the sidewall at all.

That said when I worked at a tire shop 6 or 7 years ago (can't remember exactly - I'm an electrician now ) I did patch one on the sidewall on my own car even though you aren't supposed to as it creates a higher risk of a blow-out and never had any problems in 2 years. Most shops don't want the liability of doing it, so they just refuse.

I had one in the same exact spot and got it patched at Firestone a few weeks ago. I examined the whole tire afterwards and couldn't even tell it was patched except for the new balance weights they put on it.

EDIT: Sorry I used the word "patch" in the general sense. The correct term was a plug. They took off the tire and plugged it from the inside.

A patch is a square piece that goes on the inside of the tire. It is not visible from the outside at all. A plug is a piece of rubber that fills in the hole (you can see it from the outside). Some plugs also have a small circular patch attached to the back of them.

You should ask in the wheel and tire forum - Gary can answer that. I would also recommend Discount tire to take your tire for evaluation. I suspect they can patch it
