i've noticed that if you manually move the cursor around, and hover it over streets, a streetname will usually pop up. the return-key gets you back in tracking-mode to see where you are.

the 3G MMI has it's flaws. I have a 2010 Q7.

I also noticed that not all street names appear on the map, no matter what zoom level you're at.

And the radio always on function I don't understand the thinking of the designers behind this. What's worse is that if I mute it after ignition, I drive for a little bit, it comes back on by itself. I mute it again, and sometimes it comes back on again. I think it might be the speed audio pilot function where it turns up the volume when you drive faster.

My best work around is changed the source to JukeBox (where I don't have any media) so that it does not play anything.

The electronics are better in the BMW in a couple areas, comparable in several, inferior in many. But keep in mind, my Q5 is quite loaded (Prem Plus w/Nav) vs a somewhat basic 128i (Prem pack, value pack, auto trans). For example, the prgramming for the individual key fobs seems much better in the 128, more consistent in its function. I have the base audio in both the 128 and the Q5 and the BMW SUCKS in comparison to the Audi. The bluetooth has better sound in the Audi but the voice tagging is more accurate in the BMW. Keep in mind, I don't have any real complaints for either car, love them both.

My biggest, if not only, complaint of my Audi is the horrible POI database of the Nav. It's also not the most user friendly system. I find it difficult to use sometimes and this is coming from someone who builds computers as a hobby. I don't have the Nav in my BMW but have used the newest iDrive in a friends new 335i (which has less than 4000 miles and has been in for the High Pressure Fuel Pump problem twice already, but that's another topic!) and I very much like it. The screen is larger and seems a little easier to use. The POI database also seemed more complete in my short time fiddling with it.

Either way, I WILL get Nav on my next car, which will be either an A5, a 328i coupe (don't want the HPFP problems), or the upcoming C300 coupe. I've got about a year and a half before my Q5 lease is up. Love the Q5, just don't need the space anymore.

Sorry to the OP if I got off track!

so I decided with play with the NAV today.

What I find is that if zoomed all the way in (30ft scale), I can see ALL the street names, albeit not all placed within the viewing area, I think the designers might choose this method for asestheics? So not all the street names are bunch together. Every street that didn't have a name when I was zoomed out (75ft, 100ft), does have a street name when zoomed in. I might have to move the cursor around the screen a bit for the other street names to appear.

I live in L.A. and most of the smaller street names DO NOT show up on my Q5 Nav screen.

It's interesting how some automotive navigation systems are so much better than others. It's not like it's a new technology (any more). With all the well-engineered things Audi has put into the Q5, I think the MMI interface and the Navigation are actually below average in both execution and usability.

Don't get me wrong, I love our Q - it just deserves a more user-friendly MMI, and a better Nav presentation.

In addition, when I was in downtown San Diego, all the buildings were in 3D, including Petco Field, the baseball stadium. You could actually zoom the GPS in and see in the field, very impressive. And it should be noted, the 3D buildings are the actual buildings, not just a made-up building where there might be one. Same thing in downtown Phoenix.

I was downtown yesterday (or uptown, Central ave north of the I10 but only two buildings were showing up in 3D. I tried different zoom levels. Is that what you were seeing? I was expecting more of the buildings to show up in 3D.

funny thing is that the one building that did show up in 3d (the Qwest building) was tilted worse than the tower of Pisa. It looked like it was about to tip over

I'm guessing that you have one of your settings not set to Max or whatever they call it because if I drive anywhere near downtown, I get dozens and dozens of 3D buildings. If you get anywhere near downtown and zoom out just a little or move the cursor around, you'll see Chase One Field, U.S. Airways Center, City Hall, the city court building, Good Samaritan Hospital, and just about all of the buildings near them. And not just the big ones, there are several small buildings that appear also. Double check your setup page for the Nav, I think you need to adjust something if you're not seeing them. And contrary to what some have said, I find it quite useful, especially out of town. One of the coolest is in Las Vegas, you see every casino and all the different architecture, such as the Eiffel Tower at Paris, the Statue of Liberty at NY, NY, the Bellagio fountains, etc. Very cool!

The funny thing is the one building you said you were seeing, the old Qwest building, was razed this past year and is no longer there!

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help with your settings.
