The owners manual says it is ok to use 87 AKI but may have reduced performance. No mention of any harm to engine and we have 1000mi on 87 octane with no problems and plenty of performance for us. Saves $4 per tank and we just put 100,000mi on our RX330 on 87 with no money spent on engine whatsoever and saved about $1000 over those miles.

Interesting - In S. Africa the intruction manual and tank flap infospecifially recommends 95 octane or higher for my 2.0 TFSI Q5. The same applied to my previous 2006 A4 2.0 TFSI. Locally only 93 and 95 are available at higher altitudes such as Johannesburg but at the coat 97 is common.

Use Premium fuel only. The direct injection is an issue with all manufacturers that use it. There is an issue with carbon build up on the 3.2 A4, A6, and 4.2 FSI in the RS4. It;s related to fuel quality, and the fact that the vehicles ideally need 95 for maximum performance.
