New Audi isn't the Audi of old. There are very few problems reported on this board, and actually fewer than I'd expect. I will happily keep my Q5 beyond the warranty period.

35K on the wife's Q and no problems at all. We do add half a quart of oil occasionally but that is it to date...

My wife is on her 4th Outback limited . She now has a 2012 with a 2.5 engine For 30-31K loaded you can't bet it for reliability and comfort. 45K on it and original tires, brakes and zero warranty problems. She gets 33-36 on the highway and up to now just oil changes that I do myself. Yes the Q5 handles better and is nice inside but for what you will loose the first few years your better off with the Outback. I was given a Q5 as a loaner, very nice but I felt the Outback seats fits better for long rides. Fit and finish has to go to Audi, but after 45K I would have spent several thousand dollars in service and tires by now, not counting the time in the dealership for warranty work. Don't forget the 40K service on the DSC trans. WOW.
I've had my Audi A4 for 12 years and 120,000 miles. There have been a few problems but not excessive and expected in some degree for a 12 year old car. My next door neighbor has an Outback and has had lots of expensive problems. He is currently needing a head gasket replacement for $2500. His Outback is a lot newer than my A4.

I plan to keep my new Q5 well past warranty expiration.

Remember that Audi and VW put this engine in nearly everything they make, so they're going to have ironed out any major problems. It's been in production for quite a few years, so I would think the bugs are pretty much smashed out of it. OF course you can always get a problem, but with these, it's pretty rare. Don't skimp on the maintenance. That's the secret with almost any car.

Plan to keep mine long past warranty as well. If I get something else it will be an addition to the stable.

I have a 2004 A4 1.8T (to be replaced by my on-order Q5). Other than scheduled maintenance, the only unexpected issues I've had in 130,000+ miles were a failing coil (replaced for free about 20k miles ago under a TSB) and an issue where a mouse chewed through some of my engine wiring. I _have_ spent a fair amount on maintenance (timing belt/water pump twice, etc) but it's been an incredibly reliable and enjoyable ride. As someone else said, the key is taking good care of it, so you don't end up with nasty surprises.

Reliability? Well mine 2011 2.0T P+ has 28k on it in just short of two years, so far besides it eats oil a bit faster than I like, nothing at all.

Majority of the driving are urban, with mix of highway, either bumper to bumper or smooth sailing on the weekends.

As for the extra protection plan? If you drive more than 10k a year like I do, get it. You'll be surprised how fast those mileages rack up.

LOL I know right. Consider majority of time I spend doing bumper to bumper, thus not much mileage on it... it's LA after all.

I've had my Q5 for 4 months (11/10/12). It has 2,200 miles. I gotta get out more! So far so good.
