Does the 3.0TDI have a dipstick from the factory? Is one available aftermarket?

TDI does not have a dipstick from the factory. You can buy one:

It's easy to buy the wrong part. I did. It is nice to have a "real life" -- analog? -- dipstick to double check the electronic measurement. Mine has been spot on.
Thanks for the links, highly appreciated.

You just have to pop off a little plug -- I think mine is yellow but might be orange. Don't lose it!!!

The wise heads say not to leave the dipstick in (I'd thought about it) -- the heat from the engine can degrade/destroy the plastic ring on top.

Mine was black...

Has this actually happened to anyone?

Now you made me go to my garage and check -- I had to unplug my Christmas lights anyway, as I've misplaced my timer -- and mine looks just like yours. I guess I was thinking of the dipstick rings (my first 3.2, or wrong, one was orange and my current one for the 2.0 is yellow).

Not sure about plastic degradation but I'm somewhat of an old fart (just turned 52 11/30) and I seem to remember the good old days of metal-on-metal DSs. Perhaps a hard rubber over metal? The new ones are probably fine to just leave in 100% but with the MMI gauge onboard ... why?
