Default Q5 . 3.2 V6 Petrol 2010 year Engine Query.

Bought a USED Engine from an Ebay supplier in Benwood USA over 18 months ago , to replace my water damaged Engine. Due to health reasons could nopt work on the car, but recently swapped the Engine. Only one bank works. Engine starts but no power. The mechanic checked and mentioned that either the cam pulley, cam shaft or belt has gone.

Most likely I was sold a dud engine as it came off a crashed car .

As per mechanic access is quite hard as the covers are facing the engine bulkhead at the back.

Any idea of possible issues and if its fixable at a viable cost. Or is this a dead engine too and valves likely bent? In certain cars a cam belt failure does not result in bent valves while in others it does.

Many thanks for any inputs for proper sequence in finding the fault.

P.S. Mechanic is inexperienced in these engines and felt engine needs to be dropped for any further investigation. Was wondering if this is the case or its just about removing a few bits to replace parts like covers. Worst case scenario, if head needs to be removed from one side, is it possible with engine in place?
or is it a engine drop down affair now.

You could always just pull a spark plug and send a camera down to have a look. There is alot of things you can do to check the health of an engine before pulling it. Compression test, leak down test. Also check to see that you are getting spark, fuel and air to that bank. It has been sitting for 18 months so animals could have chewed wires or made nest in your intake runners.

Doubt if its a simple thing like an electric fault or no fuel rto one bank as the mechanic said, he detected NO MOVEMENT of the Cams on one side. This can only imply cam belt failure or cam pulley snap. Just wanted to ask other members if its possible to open up the covers in this engine on a Q5 to visually see the cam and inspect it while cranking the engine and find out the problem. If Engine is running (even thou its running rough) and cams are not moving on one side, does it mean the head needs to come off as it would have suffered valve damage? If so can it be pulled off with engine on car. Maybe someone with a WSM knows this.
