We'll be moving from a 2002 MB ML320 to a Q5 in a few months. For trips, I have a Thule storage container and some generic Thule cross bars which clamp onto the roof rails of the ML. They work great. I was hoping to use them on the Q5 but I noticed that the Q5 roof rails are solid and may not work with what I have. With that design, are you forced to go with Audi cross bars?
Thanks

The Q5 comes standard with the cross bars (you'll find them in the boot when you pick up your car). The bars have pins protruding from the mounting brackets that engauge into holes in the roof rails. This informs the car's ESP that the centre of gravity has changed and it adjusts accordingly.
You would be able to use non standard bars but if they don't engauge the holes in the roof rails then the ESP won't be adjusted.
