Is the 7 speed stronic gearbox in the 2.0 and 3.0 the same box or is the 3.0 beefed up.
If it is the same I'm guessing that the ones in the 3.0 are likely to be more troublesome as they are operating close to the maximum torque that the box can handle.
Are these boxes proving reliable and if so, what mileage should they be capable of before they start having problems.
I am used to a slushbox and just wonder if buying the stronic of is higher risk than a traditional auto.
Many thanks mark.

I'm actually not experiencing any problems. Rather I am trying to work out the likely reliability of the gearbox. My car has covered 74000 miles (2009) and I'm trying to work out how long the gearbox is likley to remain trouble free for.
I can find alot on the web about 6 speed dsg problems and failures, but not so much on the 7 speed s-tronic as fitted to the Q5.
Typically what is liekly top be the life of these boxes, 100000 + i'm hoping.

Where abouts are you? If you are in the US or Canada then you do not need to worry as you would not have the S-Tronic box!
As it is, torque is the limiting factor for gearbox strength not power. The 7 speed S-Tronic as fitted to the Q5 is rated at 600Nm (no doubt an under estimate of its true capability) so the only Q5 drivetrain that is going to come even vaguely close to that limit is the 3.0 TDI. Neither the 3.2FSI nor the 3.0TFSI are likely to trouble it.

Yes my car is the 3.0tdi, 7 speed stronic.
I'm guessing as I can't really find any info on their failure they must be pretty reliable.
Thanks for the input so far
