Depends on your state. Here in Tennessee, the tax on cars is 7%. So as long as you can sell it for 7% or higher than the dealer offers (which is easily feasible), it negates the tax advantage. Unsure of this particular scenario, but I doubt any tax advantage will outweigh the $6,000 difference he received from Carmax over the dealer.

Most dealers are going to take the car to auction, and every step wants to make a grand on the way. The local Carmax is probably putting it right on the lot.
