Here's a review of the Audi 3.0 TDI:
http://www.carsguide.com.au/news-and...3.0_tdi_review

Compared to the X3, Volvo XC60 and Land Rover diesels, the Q5 TDI has the worst mileage.

A few notes: fuel consumption figures were "official numbers" rather than actually tested (I have no idea how Australian figures align to reality, but the EU cycles are horribly off), and since only the Q5 will be available here in a diesel, there's nothing else to really compare it against. I think the only roughly similar vehicles that will possibly have a diesel in 2014 would be the GLK, Grand Cherokee, and Macan.

I the new Car and Driver, they did a comparison test of three 2.0t CUV's. Their observed mileage on each was Q5 (24 mpg), X3 (23 mpg) and Evoque (22 mpg. I would have liked to see the GLK in there but the comparo was for 2.0 engines only.

For this reason, in the world of Audi recorded steady growth in sales and other car manufacturers have worse results

Read other magazines in the world with comparison tests

There's one V6 diesel in Fuelly with 11 fill ups:

The numbers for the 2012 will be different from the 2013(EU)/2014(US).

For 2014 the TDI engine will be the updated V6 TDI that the Q7 Received this year:
http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...-diesel-engine

3.0 liter V-6 TDI engine that delivers 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque!

This new engine, which also features in the 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel, not only produces 15 more horsepower than the previous engine fitted to the Q7 TDI, it’s also 12 percent more fuel efficient. Audi claims a mileage of 19/28 mpg city/highway. If that wasn’t enough, the new engine also weighs around 55 pounds less than the previous unit.
4 new TDI 2014 model announcement:
http://www.autoblog.com/2012/11/19/a...headed-for-us/

so Add 12% efficiency, 15HP, Updated Styling, + new Google Earth MMI to that review and it could easily sway in the favor of the Q5 instead of the X3...

Awesome. That's good. Even tho the upgraded BMW Navi hits the X3 in the MY 2014, I prefer the Audi Navi. Also, isn't it true you'd have to wait even longer for an X3 TDI with them not shipping to the US till this time next year?

The Q5 2.0T (which you initially mentioned you were looking at) has good mileage for a mid-sized SUV / CUV, very acceptable power, decent room, etc. If seeing it and driving it didn't sell you, we probably won't do it here.

They appear to have been pretty reliable. Remember, they are fairly complicated machines with a lot of electronics, so things can happen. I don't recall very many stories of someone stranded on the side of the road, though. There are bad anecdotes about Mercedes lately, and very much about Land Rover. I would expect the Q5 to be at least as "reliable" as the BMW.

Although guys will post complaints, I don't see much in the chronic problem category. Also remember that forums like this will have 2 things, fanboys and complainers. A very biased source either way.

My one that is on the boat inbound will be my 4th Audi (plus a couple of B5.5 Passat cars that were based on the A4 chassis). Most were pretty reliable, with a few things that needed fixing. The ur-allroad was a problem child with it's complicated chassis and powertrain, but even then, it is probably my wife's favorite car to date. As a whole, there are few truly bad cars today, it's more down to features, fit, price, and what you like.

what I do: i drive 500 miles a week, mostly highway, in the snow belt...currently have a murano, want a change + it sucks in the snow

i looked at the rx, fx, q5, xc60.

the audi wins on the mpg and awd, but im worried about the reliability? With my driving, the last thing I need is car issues

thoughts?

You are a good candidate for a diesel. Consider the vw touareg tdi. It is a truly great vehicle based on the cayenne. It is up market (except in brand snobbery) from the q5 and gets amazing mileage and is a tank yet serene on hwy. I am likely to replace my tiguan with it but will get the vr6 as I drive far less.

Oh and don't believe the 2.0t is trash. It is a wonderfully powerful and reliable engine. No one will argue the 3.0t is not a superior motor. It is and in a class of its own. But the 2.0t is a great motor too with good hwy mileage.
