The Side Assist is a great safety feature. The Mazda 7 has it, as do other manufactures. You don't have to spend a huge amount of money to get this feature, on their cars.
The 2011 Q5 has it, but only on the Prestige Option, that adds around $11,000.00 to the total cost. The Side Assist is unfortunately, not available as an option. I think that is short sited, since it is an outstanding safety feature, that is also a great selling feautue.
Does anyone know where a compatible aftermarket product might be available, that will work with the Q5? There is a company that offers an electronic device, that moves the outside mirrors out, and then back, when the directional column is used.
I am not certain if that addresses the blind spot issue. Thanks.

IMO i think the side assist is useless and will make drivers lazy and when they drive a vehicle without, they will rely on it and not drive well. Also it sets off my radar detector...

I'm not a fan either but my wife wanted it, so, guess what we got? It's her car though so I'm happy if she is.
I turn it off when I drive the Q5. I do like the smart-key that is part of the Prestige package. This is the first car we've had with this option and it is great!

I have it on my Q5 and I don't find it useless.
It is a bit too sensitive which then forces me to check my dead angle for a car. What I mean is that I know a car is close to my dead angle but I can change lane without cutting him/her off the light flashes and makes me check to make sure I didn't miss anything and can safely change lane. So I almost treat it like a reminder to check.

I'm not aware of any aftermarket options, either. And though I'm not a hater, it shouldn't be thought of as a critical safety feature. I believe it is more of a convenience. If I want to pass, I catch the warning light with peripheral vision and leave my eyes forward on the road, saving a second or so searching the mirror. And I don't see the false alarms everyone else is seeing, and I use a radar detector.
