There are two pieces, a front one that ties into the front bumper and goes back to just past the centerline between the front wheels. It clips into the back piece that extends another 18" or so. Where the two pieces join, the snow had caught and popped the clips out and must have folded the piece back because now it is torn. I guess i will have to have it replaced. Luckily the clips were still there, so for now i have it put back together, but it is pretty damaged. I should have just stayed home today!

That is why I was looking to get a metal skid plate.

If you broke part #6 in the pic then you took out the same one I did last year(running over a 5 gallon potted plant on the Interstate). That part cost me a little over $136.00. I installed it in about 20 minutes with the Q up on one ramp. Very easy job.

Coolieman, I've been wondering why the EDL concept they use to transfer torque side to side doesn't work front to back across the torsen, but can't quite figure it out. Need to read more about it

Because the EDL works by using the ABS system to apply brake pressure to the spinning wheel which is the one without traction. Thus giving the static wheel force so that it will now spin.

To do this front and rear the brakes would have to be applied to both wheel on the front or rear axle depending which has traction and which doesn't. That wouldn't work very well because now your other axle will moving while one isn't. Audi is working on the new crown gear center diff which would fix this. along with torque vectoring rear diff.

If your rear wheels are spinning stuck and the fronts have traction i believe if you enable the parking brake which locks the rear wheels you are basically doing what you mentioned about a center diff EDL.

Thank you, but it looks to me like part #6 may be the panel on the side. The piece that was damaged actually covers the oil pan. it is attached to the front bumper and extends back roughly the middle of the front wheels, where it ties into what i think are pieces #5 and #6 in the diagram. I will try to get a picture of it tonight. BTW, where did you order from? I can't seem to find it on-line. I am calling the dealer soon, so I will report back.

Well worth the money.

that's because it's not a skidplate, it's a splash shield. it's not meat to hit anything remotely solid and come out of it in good shape.

I don't think it hit anything hard, just a bunch of fresh snow. i think the snow just wedged in the seam and it acted like a shovel scooping up the snow until it bent backward. I had the water pump replaced a few weeks ago, so maybe it wasn't re-installed completely tight. Anyway, it is an expensive piece. First Dealer quote is $380 for the part, $80 minimum for install. I am going to keep checking.
