So we don't actually know what the update is for?

It was not the reason you went to the dealer?

I don't think I have ever heard of software updates for cars, only my Dell PC & Microsoft! can we download stuff ourself?

Welcome to the world of modern day german cars. (or modern day cars in general). In the one year I had my BMW, I had three software updates. Everything is controlled by the computer, including transmission, etc. I even had a software update to change the turbo to get rid of turbo lag.

Old days diesel use to run as long as you closed fuel valve. Today your car, even diesel, is totally dead if computer is not working.

Even motorcycles, my 2008 r1200gs beemer didn't even activate the normal power on sequance when immobilizer broke and didn't recognize the code in my key. Lucky me it happened during service so it took 10 mins to replace it with new sensor.

My dealer claimed to have done a software update on my B7 A4. This was after I took it in for a standard service. Did not elaborate and I would have been none the wiser - no noticeable difference to anything afterwards.
