Had this smell in my car. The car is almost 2 years old with 11k miles on it and is always garaged. The smell went away after my 2nd scheduled maintenance. I am not sure if they did any flushing, but i know for sure that they replaced the pollen filter.

I have this sometimes as well. Probably only about 10% of the time though. When it does happen, it lasts for less than a minute and then goes away on its own (w/o opening windows). My car is garaged and I haven't been able to figure out why it happens (i.e. after rainy days, on humid days, etc...) There seems to be no consistent pattern...
Most auto parts places carry products specific for this purpose

"the dirty sock syndrome" is remedied by cutting off the A/C compressor about 3-4 minutes before you reach your destination...essentially drying out the fins in the evaporator. Just press the snowflake button and allow the fan to run. The dry evaporator will not promote bacteria growth. This is a common problem with many cars. It seems that with the smaller and more efficient evaporators crammed into smaller better sealed boxes the mildew growth becomes the trade-off. Problem gets worse with higher relative humidity...rain much lately where you are?
