On the last Gen Audi A8 where the basic MMI layout first emerged, we call this the "Pepsi Syndrome" after the old SNL spoof of China Syndrome. Basically, if you spill anything beyond water and it gets into any of the MMI buttons and such, the electronic board underneath melts down most of the time. On that car it's a $400 part, plus the labor. Even if it doesn't get all the way in, you can still end up with sticky buttons that can also cause MMI to act up.
As more than a few found out and posted there, not warranty covered either, even though on A8's my experience is they are pretty liberal to keep high end owners happy. Thus, lots of caution w/ any soda, coffee, flavored drinks, etc. Have admonished the family more than a few times to avoid meltdowns.
