Considering Buying a New 2018 SQ5
Looking at buying a new 2018 SQ5. Love the car but this would be our first German Luxury. We have owned Acura's in the past and have been happy with their low maintenance. We are long term owners, typically keeping cars for 10-12 years at least. Have read a lot about German cars having lots of issues. Would like a general guidance from existing longterm Audit owners about their maintenance experience with their Audis.
Thank you.
Thank you.

1998 VW Passat: blew a timing belt in spite of regular scheduled maintenance. Bent valves, damaged pistons. Car fell apart bit by bit after 100k miles.
2001 Audi TT: this was the stereotypical german car nightmare after warranty: regular expensive ($1500+ each) repairs every few months (clutch, ABS, AC, roof hydraulics, clutch again, window regulators, total loss of electronics...)
2004 VW Touareg: Zero problems until 180k miles. After 14 years in the Dallas heat interior adhesives are starting to fail.
2018 Porsche Macan: too new to have any problems.
So from a reliability point of view, my one Audi product was awful. That said, I’d expect the SQ5 to be more like the Touareg. The SQ5 is more premium than the TT (which was a Golf in lingerie) and I think I just got unlucky with that car. If you garage it and stick to the maintenance schedule it’ll likely be a great car. If it turns out bad, it’ll be very expensive to get major issues fixed.

If you want performance, luxury, and tech get the Audi and yea you will pay more for required maintenance over the years as compared to Acura. But Audi is light years ahead of both Acura and Toyota when it comes to performance, handling, and tech. The Audi drives like a European car and can be customized to do so from the cockpit.
If you want reliability go with Toyota or Lexus; and you'll have low maintenance costs with those as well.

I cannot comment on Audi reliability over time since our SQ5 is only 4 months old, but BMW tends to fall into that same "German quality bin". I had a 2008 BMW 335xi, owned it for 8 years with zero issues. Swapped it for a 2016 340xi, no issues to date as well.
The recession in 2008 was pretty influential on all brands. The Honda Civic (known for it's awesome reliability) dropped substantially at this time point (and has now recovered).
Long story short, technology, manufacturing and business practices have changed drastically in the past 10 years. At the end of the day, you need to look back a couple years if you want a true "feeling" for any brand. (Regardless of what you are looking at -- cars, TV's, etc).
