Is everyone using 91 octane or higher? (I am, but @ $4.40/ gal i might have to sell off some stocks
to fill up the Q!!!)
some people swear that 'no frills' 87 octane is just as efficient, only with decrease in HP..

You need higher octane anyways, but at higher elevation, it's NEEDED! why? because
since the air to fuel mixture is lower/higher, it needs to compensate via the gas. You even risk completely killing your engine. I know that in mountainous areas, such as Colorado, and Vermont, the dealers near the mountains, ONLY USE the best fuel. Warranty is void when using lower octane in the areas. I've heard Saab, and BMW dealers say this.

it doesn't absolutely need premium gas ...
I think the Audi is middle of the road on this. Our Volvo runs exactly the same on regular or premium. The engine adjusts the ignition timing and while there may be a slight drop in power, I can't tell the difference. I have measured the mileage and there's no discernible difference there either.
The Audi runs a bit more coarse at times with midgrade or regular (I've only put in regular once or twice for comparison).
At the other end of the spectrum, our Z4 runs like crap on midgrade (until it warms up) and horribly on regular (stalls on occasion).
I had a WTF moment myself this morning when I pulled into the gas station. In 2000 I used to pay $1.20 and get a free carwash at Shell. Quite a contrast ...
I'm looking forward to the time we tell you-know-who what to do with their oil !!!

This is the opposite of what is needed with a carburetor fuel system.
Don't know why the principle would be different with injection. I know this because I fouled my plugs really bad while riding my Valkyrie motorcycle in the mountains. I had assumed that I needed to compensate for the elevation with premium fuel instead of the usual regular gasoline.
Less oxygen requires less not more octane. At least on my bike it did.

Nothing personal (just replying at the end) I never get why ..
Americans are so hung up on getting the cheapest possible juice.
So the good go gas is more expensive. SO WHAT
Why do you care? Are you poor? Its one thing trying to get the best deal on price but putting in a lesser product is just pointless. Its not like you are punishing the Oil Industry.
You get less mpg, less HP, less engine life and less exhaust life by using it.
I am pretty sure we calculated a while back that the cheaper fuel was working out more expensive mile for mile anyway.
Cut out one journey a month.
Buy a smaller car.
Give up one little luxury like a choclate bar/ice cream.
Pay less for the good stuff at a different station.
All thses things will save you way more money than putting in lower octane fuel.
I bought my Audi because I wanted the best not the cheapest.
I can think of one possible example, even then I may be wrong.
I travelled on several Interstates and found that as I was autocruising most of the time without accelerating (or steering) I could fill with cheap **** and refuel at/near my destination with the good stuff...then again it was a rental;-) and I never did the math.
